WEATHER

Peru has many different ecosystems and regions – the coast, the highlands and the Amazon jungle. The weather will vary distinctly in each region throughout the year. December marks the start of summer and is an overall good time to visit many parts of the country.

Lima will be warm and sunny during this time of year, unlike the winter when it is mostly cloudy and gray. Average temperatures will be in the mid 70s during the day and mid 60s in the evenings.

The Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu are at a lower altitude than Cusco and tend to be warmer. It will be in the high 60s to mid 70s during the day and will cool down in the evenings to the 40s and 50s.

Cusco will be a bit cooler due to its high altitude but expect lots of sunshine. Daytime temperatures tend to be in the low to mid 60s and, in the evenings, it can cool down to the 40s.

You will want to be prepared for some rain in the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Cusco in the month of December but the average rainfall is about 4-5 inches for the entire month and, many times, it is only a light drizzle.

In the Amazon, the water level in December is high making it ideal for exploring the many waterways by small boats. The temperatures are fairly consistent year round. In December, it will be in the high 80s to low 90s during the day and low 70s in the evening. Humidity, heat and some precipitation are daily factors year round.

For the most accurate forecast, we suggest checking www.weather.com or www.wunderground.com closer to departure. For the Sacred Valley, you will want to search for Urubamba. For the Amazon River, you will want to search for Iquitos.
